1. Overview

This module is actually the final module in your child’s Phonological/Phonemic Awareness curriculum. Your child is nearly ready to start learning to read! The Consonant Blends module is your child’s introduction to initial consonant blends, those found at the beginning of a word. Examples of words with initial consonant blends are black, clear, broom, crew, snow, skip, store, and dry. Consonant Blends are different from Digraphs, in which two letters combine to form a new sound that is different from the sound made by either of the individual letters. Hearing, isolating and manipulating the internal (second) consonant of an initial consonant blend is extremely hard for many children — especially before they are seven years old. We cover this in the final two activities of the module, Sound Store and Sound Hound. This module does not cover final consonant blends, such as in words like bank, mist, and pant. Your child will be better able to hear and manipulate these tricky sounds after he/she has some experience with reading. ↑ Top
